Come get a move on with this new course! We will study differing world religions in their commitment to dance and movement rituals, as well as the relationship of the body to movement sensation. We consider liturgical practices in Christianity; the relationship between Bharatanatyam, Kathak, yoga, and Indian spiritual traditions; Sufism and the Dervishes; Chinese opera dances, village dances, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, and Taoism; Native American ghost dances; Japanese Classical dance traditions and Shinto practices; Ancient Greek gods, goddesses, and the dancing of the Chorus in Greek theatre; Africanist practices of religious rites and dances; and magical traditions in South American music and dance making. We will also explore the sacred nature of the current club dancing scene, as we appreciate the spiritual nature of your own individual dance expression!
